The capture, storage, and utilization of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the flue gas have drawn great interest that is due to serious concern on global warming caused by anthropogenic CO2. Tremendous efforts have been applied to CO2 capture from stationary industrial sources using a wide range of liquid and solid sorbents. Herein, we report nitrogen(N)-doped carbon adsorbents obtained from glucose. The N-doped carbons were synthesized by grinding glucose with solid hydrazine, followed by storing the mixed powder at 80 oC. Solid hydrazine plays an essential role in reducing glucose and doping nitrogen (N) into the carbon framework. The reduced powder was further annealed at high temperatures above 500 oC, yielding the N-doped carbons with high crystallinity. The resulting N-doped carbons were fully characterized by various means such as elemental analysis, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, adsorption and desorption measurement, thermo-gravimetric analysis, and IR spectroscopy. The N-doped carbons selectively captured the CO2 gas. They exhibited a CO2 adsorption capacity of 4.09 mmol/g, which is higher than those of amine-supported solid adsorbents. The details of the CO2 adsorption capacity of N-doped carbons will be discussed in comparison with other known carbon materials.
