Nickel-catalyzed C–S and C–C coupling reactions have been developed with application toward the synthesis of active pharmaceutical ingredients. This new technology utilizing Earth-abundant catalysts seeks to address challenges surrounding both cost and waste reduction, two factors that often are difficult to balance when considering implementation of known methods using either stoichiometric reagents or precious metal catalysts at scale. The reaction discovery, substrate scope, and mechanism were investigated and in each case, a unique reagent/additive was found key to establishing robustness in the reaction.
