This research provides a green chemistry method to synthesize silver nanoparticles. This study used Vitamin C as both the capping and reducing agent in the synthesis of silver nanoparticles, in which silver nitrate was used as the silver source material. Different sized silver nanoparticles were obtained by controlling the reaction time under the fixed reaction ratios. Centrifugation was used to purify obtained nanoparticles. The characterizations of the silver nanoparticles were performed using UV-Vis spectroscopy for optical absorption detection, Raman spectroscopy for surface chemical modification analysis, and transmission electron microscope (TEM) for direct observations. Stable silver nanoparticles ranging from 10nm to 40nm were produced. Continued research directions include the study of particle size distribution versus reaction conditions (time, pH, concentrations of silver nitrate and vitamin C) and the exploration of optimized Ag NP samples obtained from this research for public health applications.
