The extension of the contact angle concept into the solid-liquid-liquid (S-L-L) arena to characterize wettability involves a few nuances. While the receding and advancing contact angles have simple definitions in solid-liquid-vapor (S-L-V) systems, they take on special meanings when extended to S-L-L systems. This presentation attempts to describe these differences and relate them to spreading and adhesion phenomena that contribute to defining wettability in S-L-L systems.<br/>While the spreading phenomenon controls the nature of distribution of oil, water and gas within the pores of the porous rock medium, the adhesion phenomenon controls the wettability preference of the rock to either oil or water. Thus, both phenomena affect the multiphase flow behavior within the tortuous flow paths in the porous media, which in turn determines the extents of recovery and retention of the natural resources of oil and gas. These aspects will be addressed in this presentation with several example cases.
