Utilization of resorbable hydrogel compositions in implantable medical devices for purposes such as sealing, coating and drug delivery often requires their sustained attachment to specific tissues. Although the surface properties of different internal tissues vary widely, strategies for generalized bonding have been developed which can incorporate chemical adhesion and physical interlocking or encapsulation means.  The hydrogel structures can be formed <i>in situ</i> by polymerization or can be preformed as contact adhesives.If the viability of the tissue to whch the hydrogel is bonded  is intended to be maintained, it is important to control the type of surface interactions.   For example, toxic monomers such as certain acrylates and substantive covalent conjugation even of non-toxic monomers to tissue are avoided.   An overview of hydrogel to tissue bonding principles with emphasis on a unique, proprietary tissue sealant involving a primer and topcoat will be provided during the presentation.
