Traditionally organometallic functionalization of amines has required the use of pre-installed protecting or directing groups. However, with the advent of transient directing groups our research group has explored the use of both carbon dioxide as a transient directing/protecting group as well as acid-based strategies to facilitate free amine-directed reactions. Based on this, we are working to quickly access new chemical space surrounding the amine functional group, with an eye towards compounds of use to the medical and agrochemical industries.
