There is a large interest in porous graphitic materials with designed nanoarchitectures for a wide array of applications. Applications such as magnetic resonance imaging and fluorescence have benefited from the properties of graphitic carbon with rare earth oxides and can be further expanded to areas such as energy storage, microwave absorption, and acoustic vibration suppression. Multiple three-dimensional porous carbon nanostructures have been synthesized using various rare earth templates (gadolinium hydroxide, cerium hydroxide, europium hydroxide, etc.) as catalysts. One of the three-dimensional porous nanostructures synthesized was graphitic hollow carbon nanotubes using a gadolinium hydroxide template from an acetylene/water mixture. The resulting carbons retain the nanostructure of the hydroxide nanorods even after removal of the template. The hollow carbon nanotubes are porous with a surface area of 665 m2/g. The carbon consists of graphitic layers with d-spacing of 0.40 nm and has an IG/ID ratio of 0.94. The energy density was 52.3 Wh/kg with a small IR drop of 0.023 V, and the power density was 1739 W/kg at 1 A/g making this porous carbon nanostructure material desirable for supercapacitor energy storage. All tested carbon nanostructures have excellent electrical conductivity at 105 S/m.
