State-of-the-art Li ion battery manufacturing process is primarily based on the electrode fabrication method with minimum environmental concern. Present method highlights on “<i>slurry casting</i>” process, involving a toxic organic solvent N-methyl pyrrolidone (NMP). Likewise, efforts to delaminate the valuable active materials from <i>end-of-life</i> cathode in Li-ion batteries also involve the use of NMP. Despite success NMP is declared as a priority substance in USA under the Toxic Substance Control Act, due to its slow biodegradability and high carcinogenic, mutagenic and reprotoxic risks to the human health. Thus, sustainable fabrication of electrode involving greener alternatives of NMP is urgently required. Recently our group developed an advanced cathode fabrication and delamination processes using two green organic solvents, methyl-5-(dimethylamino)-2-methyl-5-oxopentanoate (PolarClean) and dimethyl isosorbide respectively, as an alternative of NMP. I will elaborate the electrode fabrication and delamination methods with demonstrating the electrochemical cycling results.
