Gas hydrates has emerged as a potential alternate against conventional energy resources for fulfilling rising energy demands. In recent years, research in the field of hydrates has evolved various potential applications of gas hydrates which uplifted its role in oil and gas industry. Apart from being a potential energy resource, its applications have emerged in gas separation, gas storage, mitigation of climate change, water desalination, etc. These areas require application of suitable additives which influence growth and dissociation of gas hydrate in a desired manner. Nanoparticles have emerged as a potential additive in gas hydrates studies due to its small particle size. The hydrate formation emits large amount of heat which lowers the hydrate formation rate. Due to high thermal conductivity of nanofluids, the hydrate formation rate is enhanced which can be utilized for CO<sub>2</sub> sequestration purpose. However, several studies have showed the dual behavior of nanoparticles which promotes its role on wider scale. Graphite and zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles has showed inhibitive nature as it reduces the water activity. This manuscript provides a brief review about the influence of various nanoparticles in the thermodynamic/kinetic study of gas hydrates. In addition, extensive research conducted with different nanoparticles reflecting its dual nature in gas hydrate studies is briefly discussed. Further, future directions of research in nanoparticles which will enlarge the role of gas hydrate in oil and gas industry are enlightened,
