O- and N-donor ligands such as β-diketonates, amidinates, and alkoxides, to name a few, have been shown to form volatile f-metal complexes useful for applications ranging from chemical vapor deposition to f-metal separations. It has long been known that fluorinating ligand substituents can enhance the volatility of metal complexes, which is often attributed to changes in intermolecular forces. However, changing ligand functional groups also alters the sterics of the ligand, and this can make it challenging to discern between volatility enhancements due to electronic effects and those due to solid-state structural changes in f-metal complexes. Here we describe heptadentate β-ketoiminate ligands generally referred to as TRAC and their complexes with lanthanides and uranium. These heptadentate ligands fully encapsulate the f-metal and allowed us to investigate the electronic influence of ligand substituents on volatility independent of significant structural changes in the solid state. The structures and thermal properties of complexes containing different fluorinated TRAC ligands will be presented to show how fluorination and metal identity affect the volatility of f-metal complexes.
