Fluorinated aromatic compounds are actively studied for liquid-crystal, semiconductor, host-guest chemistry, and pharmaceutical science. However, the ‘dark’ πσ* state deters the application of fluorinated aromatic compounds for the sensor area in the pharmaceutical/medical application due to the dramatic decrease in absorption and emission. In this report, along with the results from the penta- and hexa-fluorinated benzene in different solvents, we will present the difference observed from isomers of tri- and tetra-fluorinated benzenes. Furthermore, the UV absorption and emission study supported by Gaussian calculations reveal that σ* orbitals of C-F overlap to lower the ‘dark’ πσ* state energy more effectively.
