We recently reported that dimethylphenylsilane, Me2PhSiH, functions as a stoichiometric reducing agent for the preparation of hexachlorobis(dimethoxyethane)dimolybdenum(III) from MoCl4(dme). This silane-based protocol resulted in a clean overnight reduction with a near quantitative yield and a simple work-up. Since the silane reduction led to a high yield, high purity product, we sought to expand its use as a reducing agent to more challenging systems, viz., the production of uncoordinated, mid-valent transition metal chlorides. We found that when stirred in aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbon solvents, insoluble high-valent Group 5 and 6 metal chlorides are cleanly reduced to produce the corresponding mid-valent targets. To further probe the utility of this process, we examined the reactivity of the isolated metal chlorides by reacting each species with coordinating ethers or phosphines to form traditionally employed synthons.
