MALDI and DESI have long been available as ionizations however DESI has only been recently developed to match the robustness and simplicity of MALDI methods. This presentation will investigate the state of the art of these two ionization techniques, how they differ and where they might be most applicable. With recent advances similarities in sensitivity (compound specific) and spatial resolution the choice between these can distill down to the consideration of specific chemistry required, the speed of the analysis and the tissue or matrix type. This presentation will present a series of choices that should be considered when deciding which of the techniques to use to extract the most appropriate information from samples. <br/><br/>This presentation will show differences in classes of molecules such as lipids, proteins, peptides and small molecules, and include an example of a focused molecular class and its metabolites. We will also discuss types of mass spectrometry analyses and the analyzer type and methods work with the ionization type. <br/>We will conclude with broad recommendations for types of analysis that depend on the sample type, the required speed of analysis together with required spatial resolution.
