Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic the General Chemistry Lab curriculum at Lewis University was designed to provide students with an semester-long course-based research experience. Results from the CURE survey revealed gains statistically greater than benchmark in nearly every category. However, during the 2020-21 academic year General Chemistry Labs were run entirely virtually. A reorganization of the curriculum was centered around lab kits so that students were able to execute experiments at home. Some elements of researchable questions were retained for student teams to explore. Surprisingly, data from the CURE survey still indicates growth in many categories, including those related to collaboration, presenting results orally, and a lab or project where no one knows the outcome.
