Much effort has been devoted to developing advanced electrolyte materials for energy storage systems, such as redox flow batteries (RFBs) and electrochemical CO2 conversion. Nanoparticle Organic Hybrid Materials (NOHMs), consisting of a nanoparticle core and a tethered polymeric canopy, show great potential for use as novel electrolyte materials due to their unique properties, including negligible vapor pressure, chemical tunability, oxidative thermal stability, and high interaction with redox-active species. In this talk, we will first discuss our efforts toward studying the near-electrode surface behavior of NOHMs in electrolyte solutions and their effect on electrochemical reactions. NOHM-I-HPE was found to facilitate the formation of smooth zinc deposits on the electrode. The structured polymeric canopy of NOHMs allowed the formation of void spaces and free columns for enhanced transport behaviors. However, it was also found that NOHM-I-HPE reduced the current density during electrodeposition due to blocking some of the electrode active sites. We will also highlight our work on the salt effects on solution viscosity and structural configurations of the polymeric canopy. We found that the addition of salt into the NOHM-based electrolyte reduced the hydrodynamic diameter of the NOHMs, increased its self-diffusion coefficient, and lowered the viscosity of the electrolytes accordingly. Finally, we developed a large-scale synthesis of monodispersed magnetic NOHMs to further increase the mobility of NOHMs in electrolyte solutions by the magnetic field.
