The elements titanium and scandium both have several isotopes with potential uses in nuclear medicine. For titanium, the isotope 45Ti (t1/2= 3.08 h, Eβ+,avg= 439 keV, β+= 85%) has promise for PET imaging applications and 44Ti (t1/2= 60 y), which decays via electron capture to form 44Sc, has promise for a long-lived 44Ti/44Sc generator. For scandium, 44Sc (t1/2= 4.04 h , Eβ+,avg= 632 keV, β+= 94%) shows promise for PET imaging and has a true theranostic pair with the β- emitter 47Sc (t1/2= 3.35 d , Eβ-,avg= 162 keV) for therapeutic uses. Titanium and scandium are intimately connected in isotopic production, as 45Ti and 44Ti are typically produced via the proton bombardment of natural 45Sc, 47Sc from either Ca2+ or Ti4+ targets via various methods, and 44Sc through the generator pair 44Ti/44Sc. For these reasons, efficient separation of titanium and scandium is necessary for radionuclide separation and enriched target recycling. Towards this, we employ a solid phase approach for selective chelation of titanium over scandium using tethered chelate systems, and tune selectivity of titanium over scandium to produce high purity scandium eluent solutions and resin-immobilized titanium phases.
