Over the last three decades, monodispersed, living functionalized polymers have become an indispensable class of materials in the preparation of hybrid nanostructures with both recognition function and bioactivity.  The ability to control the growth of the polymer chains in a living fashion allows chemists and materials scientists to directly synthesize materials that possess both recognition function and biologically active “payloads”.  In addition, because such polymers can be readily made in large quantities and with a broad range of functionalities, they can serve as versatile scaffolds for subsequent functionalization with many different therapeutic and targeting agents.  This presentation will highlight a few examples from our group in applying the Grubbs catalysts to the synthesis of ROMP-based bioactive polymers, multifunctional nanoparticles, and hybrid structures.  The utility of these materials in diagnostic and therapeutic applications will also be discussed.
