The semipermeable nature of a membrane controls the level of water on both sides of the membrane. Lipid membrane water permeability is often influenced by the composition and the conditions of the membrane. In this study, the two different composition of lipid membrane bilayer systems, namely dioleoylphosphatidylcholine (DOPC) and dioleoylphosphatidylserine (DOPS), are investigated to determine the stability of the mixed lipid systems consisting of various ratios. Phosphatidylcholines are zwitterionic phospholipids abundant in normal cell membranes while phosphatidylserines are anionic membrane phospholipids and found on the outer leaflet of tumor membranes. Five mixed lipid bilayer systems were constructed using CHARMM-GUI software. A 20ns molecular dynamics simulations were run to equilibrate the lipid bilayer systems. Structural properties of each system, such as average area per lipid, average volume per lipid, bilayer thickness, and lateral pressure distribution, were performed on each system to analyze the effect of altering the lipid composition on the structure and function of biological membranes.
