Ionic liquids have been (proposed to be) applied in many fields—from synthesis to electrochemistry, from spacecraft propulsion to pharmaceutical preparations. In some cases, such as electrospray spacecraft propulsion, the gas phase clustering and dissociation is directly relevant to understanding and modeling the application. In other cases, gas-phase measurements may provide important benchmarks for calculations and/or lend molecular-level insights into bulk properties. In this talk, an introduction to ionic liquids will be presented, followed by a discussion of the use of electrospray ionization and tandem mass spectrometry to investigate clustering and cluster dissociation, and a discussion of the dissociation pathways of various isolated cations as a function of cation structure. Energy resolved collision-induced dissociation mass spectrometry and complementary computational chemistry were applied.
