Measurements at the single-molecule level can reveal the dynamics, intermediates, stochastics and heterogeneity in the chemical reaction and interactions. We have formed plasmonic junctions through the controlled adsorption of a limited number of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) at a gold nanoelectrode (GNE). By modifying molecules to the GNP and GNE surfaces, the nanogap between GNP and GNE becomes a versatile nanoscale chemical reactor. The chemical interaction and reactions in the plasmonic nanogap can be catalyzed and modulated by laser irradiation, electrode potential and local chemical environment. We have monitored the time-resolved chemical changes in the junction at the single-molecule level using surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). In this talk, I will show a few examples of interactions and reactions we have probed by this system.
