<br/>I will present the story of a university startup that has developed new multidisciplinary approaches for understanding online social networks as today’s digital public square. The social listening lab “SoL-UC” currently consists of a team of 10 researchers (scientists, engineers, communication scholars, anthropologists, journalists, etc.). It is based in Chile, but I direct it from the USA. In the last 5 years, we have grown from acting as a small consulting team to implementing a system of computational tools and methodologies for the quantitative and qualitative analysis of social network data from a complex systems perspective. The lab has provided actionable interpretations of social network dynamics and interactions for customers ranging from the Chilean Secretary of State and COP25 Climate Change conference to the largest paper product manufacturer and main power and telecommunication companies in the country.
