The availability of 2D materials with ferromagnetic behavior has remained elusive until recently with several different platforms (CrI3, CrGeTe3, etc.) being synthesized, exhibiting long range ferromagnetic ordering down to a few layers. A major hurdle to overcome in these materials is the intrinsically low Curie temperatures, limiting their use in any future applications. Cr-tellurides have a rich phase diagram with many stable and metastable stoichiometries that have varying Curie temperatures approaching room temperature. This has prompted a greater interest in studying these materials but to date there is a limited number of solution phase methods with chemical vapor deposition and molecular beam epitaxy being used to grow bulk crystals or thin films. Herein, we provide solution phase method that is able to target multiple stoichiometries in the Ge-Cr-Te system including CrTe3, Cr2Te3, and GeCrTe3. We looked at the detailed reaction pathway that connects these materials and their precursors. Through the developed synthesis, we were able to obtain antiferromagnetic CrTe3 in the solution phase for the first time, as well as establish better control over the solution synthesis of Cr2Te3 and GeCrTe3. The magnetic properties of the material are studied and used to verify the stoichiometry of the Cr-tellurides in addition to x-ray diffraction and electron microscopy. This method provides a colloidal route toward multiple Cr-Te stoichiometries without the use of complicated solid-state methodologies.
