<br/><br/>Active learning strategies, such as case studies, have been shown to be effective in the classroom.  Case studies provide an active learning approach to help students make connections between the classroom and “real-life”. Here, a case study was developed on the metabolism and detection of performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) in athletes. The case, which focuses on the historical use of PEDs by athletes in the Olympic Games, was developed as a directed case appropriate for use in biochemistry and/or instrumental analysis courses.  Research revealed improvements to the detection of PEDS via improvements to instrumentation through materials available for instrument construction and advances in the computing systems used for instrumental control. Students explore the benefits the PED has for athletes, length of time the PED is in the athlete’s body, and how the PED metabolites can be detected in an athlete’s urine sample.  The case study will ask students to investigate the most common PEDs for a given sport and propose analytical methods for PED detection.
