Understanding the impact of molecular and electronic structure of transition metal coordinating ligands on the photoinduced dynamics of 3d transition metal coordination complexes will accelerate the deployment of these earth abundant materials in various technologies including photovoltaics, photochemical/photocatalytic reactions, and energy efficient devices such as OLEDs. Copper(I) complexes in particular have been widely studied as molecular photosensitizers because of their promising photophysical properties and ability to participate in excited-state redox chemistry. CuHETPHEN complexes containing a blocking ligand and a secondary ligand have been recently paid attention as photosensitizers given their broadband light absorption, considerable long-lived excited state, directional photoinduced charge separation, and the relatively high abundance of Cu compared to noble metals. To apply these CuHETPHEN in artificial photosynthesis system, it requires the development of methodology to tune the redox properties, photophysical properties, and electron-transfer processes of CuHETPHEN complexes, etc. Here we report here a series of CuHETPHEN complexes and the influence of the electronic effect of the substituted phenanthroline on the electro/ photophysical properties of the CuETPHEN complexes.
