ABSTRACT This study reports rapid and efficient removal of methylene blue (MB) from the wastewater using 2D MoS2 nanosheets. The 2D MoS2 nanosheets were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method using ammonium heptamolybdate tetrahydrate and carbon disulfide as precursors for molybdenum and sulfur, respectively. The structural, morphological, and chemical properties of the obtained 2D MoS2 nanosheets were investigated by a powder X-ray diffractometer, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The adsorption of high concentrations of MB dyes using 2D MoS2 nanosheets was systematically investigated. The analyses showed that the kinetic behavior for the adsorption of MB onto 2D MoS2 nanosheets followed the pseudo-second-order model. The adsorption rate was rapid (500 ppm MB within 1 min) using 30 mg of the adsorbent, and equilibrium was attained in a short time. The results prove the high adsorption capacity of MoS2 (Langmuir qm = 833 mg/g) and confirm the successful optimization of the synthesis parameters for obtaining 2D nanosheets, favorable for dye adsorption. These promising results encourage researchers for further investigations of 2D MoS2 nanosheets for the adsorption of other pollutants.
