Metallic nanoparticles such as silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) possess unique properties that make them suitable for application in various industrial products, including the development of chemical and biosensors. The absorption spectra of AgNPs occur in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Thus, they can serve as signal transducers to develop colorimetric assays. Citrate capped silver nanoparticles have previously been applied to detect various targets on the lateral flow strip biosensors (LFSB) with acceptable performance. In this preliminary study, a Natural Organic Matter (NOM) inspired silver nanoparticles (AgNP) was synthesized with a green approach and used to develop an LFSB for the detection of proteins. The multifunctional nature of NOM enhanced the stabilization of the synthesized AgNP. Following a systematic optimization of assay parameters, a visual detection limit of 5ngmL-1 was achieved. The assay shows promise for protein detection in resource limited settings.
