STR loci for forensic DNA genotyping are widely accepted to be "junk" or non-coding DNA. There have been several recent studies documenting disease association of STR loci. New questions are arising. Are these associations impacting some ethnic backgrounds disproportionately? Are SNPs in flanking regions indicative of protein expression or silencing or signify a protein mutation post-translation that is evident in a person’s phenotype? How does the disease association of loci impact the pursuit of justice in the U.S. criminal justice system? Should individuals be notified of their forensic genotyping results if they reveal medical information? How should this information be protected? Should some loci be removed with the new data demonstrating the associations?
