Electron transfer (ET) between an electron Donor (D) and an electron acceptor (A) promoted by a bridging unit (B) is one of the most important mechanisms in both nature and modern technologies, including photosynthesis, solar energy conversion, and catalysis. In this context, modulating the pathway of electron transfer using external perturbation of the bridge (UV-Vis, IR for instance) is an attractive goal. Herein, we report the synthesis and study of a novel D-B-A system with an IR-active meta-carborane (C2B10H12 (Cb)) bridge (B) connecting 1-(phenylethynyl)pyrene (A) and p-N,N-dimethylaniline (D), compound 1 in Fig. 1. Compared to the ortho-Cb and para-Cb, the meta-Cb, are rarely studied. The single crystal structure of 1 as well as the crystal structure of key intermediates were collected. The presentation will describe the synthesis, spectroscopic characterization, and IR studies of 1 and its homologues.
