The catalysis group at the University of Oklahoma and researchers at Phillips 66 have a long-term research collaboration focused on the development of an in-depth understanding of the chemical reactions of interest in the production of fuels. These comprehensive studies cover a wide range of inter-connected areas such as the analysis of the molecular structure of the reactants, detailed catalyst design and catalyst characterization, reaction kinetics, and processes optimization. Initially, the collaboration focused on catalytic strategies for fuel upgrading by hydrogenation of polynuclear aromatics and isomerization/ring opening of naphthenic rings, the role of nitrogen species over hydrogenation and hydrodesulfurization reactions, and the conversion of molecules containing oxygenated functional groups. Recently, research has been centered on the production of light olefinic hydrocarbons through catalytic cracking. High-value light olefins can be obtained using phosphorous-promoted ZSM-5 additives combined with the proper selection of catalytic cracking catalysts. Thus, the goal of this work is to better understand the role of catalyst modifications on hydride transfer reaction rates by understanding the role of rare earth cations, density of acid sites, and diffusional constraints in the zeolite component. An overview of past and present projects in this long-term collaboration with the University of Oklahoma will be presented.
