A highly functional biobased acetoacetate functional resin was synthesized and its curing using Michael addition and Knoevenagel condensation was studied. Using methoxylated sucrose soyate (MSSP), tert-butyl acetoacetate was used to synthesize acetoacetylated MSSP (AMSSP). Acetoacetylation allows for efficient crosslinking of acrylates through the Michael addition reaction. The acetoacetylated polyol was crosslinked with two multifunctional acrylates [1,6-hexanediol diacrylate (HDDA) and pentaerythritol tetraacrylate (PETIA)] to produce coatings via Michael Addition Reaction. Knoevenagel Condensation was also investigated as well to make coatings [Piperidine + Furan-2,5-dialdehyde (DFF) in THF solution]. The 2% PETIA, 2% HDDA, and 5% Piperidine formulations showed to make the best coatings, among the various formulations. The AMSSP was characterized via proton and carbon NMR, as well as the coating formulations were characterized via FTIR.<br/>To ensure the sustainability of the synthesized bio-based resin (AMSSP), an environmental impact assessment was carried out using the life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology. The results demonstrated that AMSSP is environmentally more sustainable compared to a petroleum-based resin with similar functionalities with a more than 90% lower impact on global warming. To characterize the variability of the outcomes of the developed LCA model, a Monte Carlo simulation is applied. Moreover, we conducted a sensitivity analysis to identify the inputs with the highest impact on the system.
