The hydroformylation reaction converts ethylene, CO and H2 into C3 oxygenates (propanal and propanol). In this talk we will discuss our attempts in performing tandem hydroformylation by starting with ethane and CO2, which represents opportunities to insert the carbon atom in CO2 into the final products. The tandem schemes combine the activation of ethane/CO2 with a downstream hydroformylation reactor using heterogeneous catalysts at ambient pressure. We will present examples of combining thermocatalytic reactors operating at different temperatures, using plasma as the excitation source in thermocatalytic reactions, and coupling an electrocatalytic reactor with thermochemical reactions. We will also discuss potential advantages and challenges for each of the tandem schemes.
