The photophysics of a previously reported series of Ru(II)-terpyridine complexes which photodissociate an acetonitrile ligand upon visible light irradiation is investigated. The 3MLCT lifetimes of the series were obtained from emission and transient absorption data over the range of 173 to 293 K and fit with a modified Arrhenius equation. The results of the fitted data were compared to the quantum yield of ligand substitution with 450 nm light, Φ450, and it became apparent that the efficiency of ligand exchange increases with the energy barrier for population of the 3LF state from the 3MLCT state. These data support the conclusion that nitrile photodissociation in this series does not require the population of a 3LF state as has been previously understood.
