Development of pressure-sensitive adhesives for consumer applications starts at the molecular level – in the chemical synthesis of polymeric components of the adhesive system. In this talk we will highlight the chemical synthesis and structure-property relationships for a class of silicone pressure sensitive adhesives. Polysiloxane materials are an attractive polymer class for development of adhesives as they can impart optical clarity, UV and thermal stability, tack across a wide temperature range, and broad adhesion across a variety of substrate types. Polymerization of polysiloxane materials will be discussed in the context of silicone elastomers used as pressure sensitive adhesives at 3M. Modifications of polymer structure will be discussed in regard to how these variables can impact critical adhesion properties.
