Photoredox reactions have shown that photocatalyst excited-states can be used to drive new bond forming reactions. Despite the usefulness of photoredox catalysis in small molecule synthesis, the reaction mechanism and kinetics are generally not well understood. Using a combination of transient absorption spectroscopy, spectroelectrochemistry, and kinetic modeling, a complete understanding of the reaction mechanism and kinetics can be developed. This presentation will highlight the success of this strategy using photoredox cross-coupling reactions that rely on cyanoarenes as electron acceptors. In addition, the formation and role of an unexpected cyanoarene donor-acceptor complex will be discussed.
