Schiff base N-(thiophen-2-ylmethylene)benzo[d]thiazol-2-amine was synthesized by the condensation of 2-aminobenzothiazole (0.1mol;1.5g) and 2-thiophenecarboxaldehyde (0.1mol;1.12g) and its metal complexes with cobalt(II) and nickel(II) were prepared and characterized by elemental analyses, molecular weights, molar conductance values, IR, electronic spectra, magnetic moment determination, TGA, mass spectra, X-ray diffraction and SEM techniques. The Schiff base has been found to act as tridentate ligand and coordinates to the metal ion via with two nitrogen and one sulphur donor atoms. The nature of complexes as studied by Monovariation method has been found to be ML2 type. Stability constants calculated by Job’s method confirm the stable nature of the synthesized complexes. The analytical and spectroscopic data suggest octahedral geometry of the complexes. The Schiff bases and their complexes have been screened for their antibacterial activity against four bacterial strains (E.coli, P. mirabilis S. aureus and B. cereus) and antifungal activity against two pathogens C. albicans and A. niger. Both the metal complexes have potent biological activity as compared to the free ligands. The metal complexes were found to have moderate to higher radical scavenging potential on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) in comparison with the ligand.
