Manufacturing generates more economic activity than any other sectors. Vibrant manufacturing fosters research, development, innovation, and increases society’s wealth and living standards. Many countries, including emerging nations, use manufacturing as a driving force to increase GDPs, competitiveness and job creation. Unfortunately, traditional manufacturing process is considered polluting, and relies heavily on fossil fuels. Many existing processes use toxic chemicals, which pose threats to humans and environment and lead to environmental injustice. Workers and communities across the world, especially in emerging economies, are exposed to hazardous chemicals. Many of them, like Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), can adversely affect people for generations because of their persistent nature. These chemicals are produced and used because of technological lock-in and a lack of ecosystem that supports new and safer solutions.<br/><br/>The large adoption of innovative green chemistry technologies can ultimately address the POPs pollution problem and transform the manufacturing process into one that is more sustainable. Creating an adequate support mechanism for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) that make chemicals with reduced hazard and waste, can increase the bottom-line profitability for entire industry sectors.<br/><br/>The Global Green Chemistry Innovation and Inclusion Network Programme is a collaborative effort between the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and six countries: Indonesia, Serbia, Uganda, Ukraine, Peru, and Jordan, to enable green chemistry capacity building to support innovation, development and technology scale-up. This six-year initiative will create a global unifying green chemistry network that will focus on international cooperation, networking, and adaptation of green chemistry alternatives for chemical, waste and manufacture related sectors. This presentation will outline various green chemistry opportunities for emerging nation manufacturing sectors, including SMEs, which support SDGs, sustainability and address environmental injustice.
