A series of hollow gold-silver nanoshells (GS-NShs) having systematically varying elemental compositions of gold and silver were synthesized and coated on carbon fibers to serve as pseudocapacitive electric charge-storage nanomaterials.  The nanoshells were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), dynamic light scattering analysis (DLS), and ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy.  The GS-NShs and their corresponding GS-NSh-coated carbon fibers were characterized by quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) to evaluate their charge-storage capacities.  As a whole, the data showed that the charge-storage properties of carbon fibers can be improved by coating with GS-NShs.  Moreover, the largest charge-capacity enhancements were observed for coating via chemical deposition vs. coating via electrodeposition.
