The development of efficient and sustainable catalysts based on Earth abundant metals requires greater understanding of how ligand environment can influence metal-based reactivity. This presentation will highlight our recent efforts to design multidentate ligands that enforce preorganized coordination geometries expected to increase the reactivity and catalytic activity of low-valent transition metal species. A series of novel tetradentate P2N2 ligands adopting unusual seesaw (C2v) coordination geometries have been synthesized and used to prepare Fe(II) and Co(II) complexes. The new complexes have been characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction, multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. In addition, the new ligand platforms incorporate features such as metal-ligand cooperativity and donor hemilability that can facilitate reactivity in catalytic reactions. Preliminary catalytic studies show that the P2N2-Fe complexes catalyze hydroboration of alkenes.
