Low molecular weight gelators (LMWGs) are small molecules that can solidify a variety of solvents including water. They form reversible gels through non-covalent forces such as hydrogen bonding, van der Waals forces, and π-π interactions. The resulting supramolecular gels show reversible gel to solution transitions. Gels formed by sugar derivatives have gained extensive interests due to their interesting applications in the areas of biomedical sciences, environmental remediation etc. In this study, we synthesized a series of 3-O-carbamoyl and acyl derivatives of 4,6 (3-nitrobenzylidene) acetal functionalized N-acetyl D-glucosamine. Their self-assembling properties were studied in various organic solvents and aqueous solutions. The gelation properties of several compounds in the presence of different metal ions were also evaluated. The metallogels are further evaluated for catalytic properties. The gels were characterized using optical microscopy for the morphology of the assemblies. The synthesis and characterizations of these sugar derivatives as well as the gelation properties and their applications for dye absorption and catalysis will be discussed.
