Multimodal imaging-guided therapy brings bright prospects to cancer research. The combination of magnetic and optic multimodal imaging can integrate the high resolution and sensitivity to achieve accurate tumor positioning. Rare-earth ions-based upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) have emerged as attractive candidates for biomedical applications through customized multi-functionalization. However, UCNPs-based T1 & T2-weighed magnetic resonance/fluorescence imaging is still a challenging. Owing to the advantages of kinetic stability, easily modification and good redox properties, bioferrocene species have been found to be promising anticancer candidates. Our continued interest in the study of ferrocenylselenoethers led us to investigate their potential biomedical property. The ferrocene-functionalized UCNPs, Fc-UCNPs, offers the potential as new nano-contrast for NIR-promoted magnetic resonanceT1&T2/fluorescence multimodal imaging and simultaneous photochemotherapy. Fc-UCNPs nanosystem demonstrated the promising potential to serve as theranostic candidate for imaging guided therapy, owning the advantages as high drug loading density, spatial and temporal controllability, clinic translatability etc.
