<br/><br/>Our research group has been working on artificial photosynthesis, focusing on developing porphyrins as photosensitizers, chemicals similar to those used in natural photosynthesis. Octaethylporphyrin (OEP) has redox properties useful for artificial photosynthesis, but is very expensive and labor-intensive to make. My research has been centered around finding a more economical alternative to OEP with similar redox properties. I am working to achieve this by replacing the electron-donating properties of the ethyl groups at the beta-positions on OEP with carbon chains of various lengths at the meso-positions. Several elements have been successfully inserted into the center of these porphyrins; aluminum and phosphorus thus far.
