Hetero(element) carboxylation of unsaturated carbon-carbon bonds is a powerful difuntionalization reaction that installs CO<sub>2</sub> and a heteroatom in a single step. Previously, the Popp group reported a hetero(element) carboxylation of vinyl arenes using boron as the heteroatom, employing mild reaction conditions, to access propionic acid derivatives. Significant electronic and steric effects limited the generality of this method. Recent methodology improvements, prompted by the discovery and characterization of phosphine additive effects, have led to a broadened alkene scope. Specific catalytic impacts of Xantphos with N-heterocyclic-carbene-copper catalyst on alkene boracarboxylation will be discussed.
