C–C bond cleavage methods combined with transition-metal catalyzed cross couplings present a powerful strategy for rapidly generating complexity from simple building blocks. A C–C bond cleavage/vinylation/Heck cascade reaction was developed to obtain densely functionalized bicyclo[2.2.2] frameworks from hydroxylated pinene derivatives derived from carvone. This method was applied towards a total synthesis of 13-hydroxypatchoulol.
