Sustainable chemical transformation will be achieved through a better understanding of the fundamental chemistry of the earth abundant elements.  In this talk I will describe a series of molecules and clusters designed and made through synthetic inorganic chemistry approaches with the goal of charting new reaction pathways and mechanisms using iron- and aluminum-based catalysis. Examples from both main group organometallic aluminum chemistry and from first-row transition metal nanocluster chemistry will be used to illustrate the influence of molecular structure on coupled electron proton transfer reactivity. Applications for these catalytic reactions include production of renewable fuels chemistry and acceptorless dehydrogenation catalysis.
