Emerging technologies—ranging from soft robotics and multi-modal vehicles to reconfigurable materials—all require new modes of actuation to drive movement and shape change. Our goal is to facilitate the development of such technology by creating new soft actuators that initiate movement on multiple length scales and do not require a physical tether. We will report on several new soft actuation systems compost of synthetic, organic polymer materials that move in response to light, including core-shell particles and other photoactive systems. The functionality of these actuators is demonstrated in simple soft robots.
