There is an increasing need for the development of probes for the detection of hexavalent chromium since it is a known carcinogen, which can cause adverse effects on human health. The development of a luminescent sensor has gained much attention due to its ease of preparation, sensitivity, and selectivity. Among these, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and doped carbon dots have shown successful detection and removal of hazardous substances in aqueous media. In this research, we have presented the use of simple organic ligands such as pyridinecarboxaldehyde as the nitrogen source and trimesic acid for the linkers for MOFs while the use of citric acid as its carbon source for doped CDs. We have utilized Zn as the metal for both functional nanomaterials. Both functional nanomaterials exhibited sensitive and selective luminescence quenching response towards CrO42- and Cr2O72- species in an aqueous solution. The MOF showed a detection limit of 0.67 mM (0.078 ppm) as CrO42- species and 1.91 mM (0.41 ppm) as Cr2O72- species. While the mixed-ligand luminescent CDs produced a low detection limit of 0.45 nM for Cr (VI). Real water samples were used to assess the practical application of the nanomaterials, and the results show acceptable recoveries, and consistency with the ion chromatography ultraviolet spectrometry (IC-UV) results. These good recoveries show that the luminescent probe has a great tendency to be used in environmental measurements.
