The synthesis of a recyclable palladium-ionic liquid catalyst encapsulated in Halloysite nano-scrolls has successfully been developed. The nanocomposite (Pd-IL@Hal) was prepared in an aqueous environment in which Pd(OAc)2 was reduced by ascorbic acid and capped with an ionic liquid grafted Halloysite. The Pd-IL@Hal catalyst was used in the “Mizoroki-Heck” coupling reactions with the alkene, acrylic acid, and other various aryl halides (in the presence of a base) to afford the resulting substituted cinnamic acid products. The catalyst was found to be efficient giving high yields under mild conditions. Pd-IL@Hal was easily recycled by filtration and washing with just the use of water. The catalyst was reused in varying reactions to test its recycled effectiveness. The synthesis of this nanocomposite as well as its uses and catalytic activity using green methods will be the focus of this presentation.
