We are involved in the design and development of antibacterial compounds inspired by a natural compound, Oroidin (found in organisms such as <i>Agelas Conifera</i> -a specific type of sponge that is found most commonly in the Caribbean, Bahamas, and occasionally Florida) that aids the host sponge in defending against biofouling and infections. We and others have developed the chemical synthesis of Oroidin and now the focus is on improving the bioactivity profile of the same and many researchers have been attempting to alter the different “sections'' of Oroidin itself. The structure of Oroidin consists of three critical parts; the head, the linker, and the tail. By altering the different sections of the Oroidin structure, it could potentially yield a simpler and yet more potent analog.  Towards that direction, we are focusing on modifying the more dispensable "linker" part of Oroidin. Specifically, an acyl linker instead of the regular Oroidin linker has been installed along with reversing the amide tail.  The Formimidamide chemistry in conjunction with bromoketones is being employed in the synthesis of the proposed analogs. The details of the progress will be shared.
