The mechanisms through which biological light-energy harvesting systems achieve efficient energy capture have received a great deal of study. One area under investigation is charge separation (CS) dynamics in multi-pathway systems, such as Photosystem I in eukaryotes, where two nearly identical CS pathways are available to the electron donating P700 chromophore. Indeed, evidence suggests the CS mechanism is bidirectional, meaning both pathways are involved in the CS. To further investigate the dynamics in multi-pathway systems, we synthesized and characterized a donor-acceptor system consisting of a single chromophore electron donor, Perylene-(Ph)4, connected to four or one naphthalene diimide (NDI) electron acceptors (Per-(NDI)4 and Per-NDI, respectively). The kinetic analysis of this model system suggests the availability of multiple pathways yields statistical rate enhancement of the electron transfer process by a factor of four, but has no effect on charge recombination.
