Mesoporous silica has been studied as drug delivery vehicles with increasing attention to theranostic applications. Mesoporous silica can be made with a variety of morphologies and pore structures. Encapsulated semiconductor nanoparticles in wrinkled mesoporous silica can be used for imaging, plasmonic, photothermal, and radiation applications. A method to encapsulate semiconductor nanoparticles in the hollow core of the wrinkled mesoporous silica will be described. Wrinkled mesoporous silica can be prepared with a hollow core and it was discovered that nanoparticles can be encapsulated in the core during synthesis. Zinc oxide and holmium doped zinc oxide nanoparticles have been encapsulated with wrinkled mesoporous silica during synthesis using a surfactant template method. The wrinkled mesoporous silica particles have been characterized by TEM, SEM, UV-Vis, fluorescence, and XRD. Encapsulated wrinkled mesoporous silica (ZnO@WMS and Ho:ZnO@WMS) combines the advantages of the mesoporosity with the properties of zinc oxide nanomaterials.
